Metals and Oxygen

Aim: to make metal oxide and observe the difference in the properties of the product compared to the reactants.

Equipment: a piece of magnesium, bunsen burner, safety glasses metal scissor tongs.

Method

  1. Light your Bunsen burner.
  2. Hold your magnesium in the scissor tongs. ensure you are holding onto this very tip of the magnesium.
  3. Place the other end magnesium into the Bunsen flame ( at the top of the blue flame ).
  4. When the magnesium begins to burn do not look directly at it, as it light emitted permanently damages your eyes.
Result: I saw how these metals ignited into the light. I can only look at this for a couple of seconds or otherwise, this may permanently damage my eyes.

Discussion: this happens because of the magnesium, when magnesium gets hot, the metal will turn into a hot light. it also because of the strong flame that we use.

Conclution: yes, this works. this works as I think of it, I wouldn't change a thing about what we did in this experiment. this was a fun experiment I would like to do it again.
